On the teachers experience

Less paperwork. More teaching.

The average K-12 teacher spends seven hours a week on administrative work that isn't teaching. Nova cuts that — not by replacing your judgment, but by handling everything around the judgment: the rubric copying, the parent emails, the gradebook math, the schedule juggling, the discipline filing.

Chapter I

What ships now.

Every item below is live in production. We pilot at El Camino Real Charter — you can demo the running system before signing anything.

i.

Live in production

Gradebook with weighted categories

Drop-the-lowest, weighted by category, late penalty policy, per-student overrides. Speed-grader for fast scoring across a class. Every change preserves the old value.

ii.

Live in production

AI grading assist (safety-clamped)

AI suggests scores and feedback grounded in your rubric. You confirm or override. AI-suggested scores cannot exceed the assignment maximum — clamped at the model boundary.

iii.

Live in production

AI authorship detection

On any submission, ask Nova to assess the likelihood the work was AI-written. Returns LOW / MEDIUM / HIGH with reasoning. Use it as a signal, not a verdict.

iv.

Live in production

Speed-grader

Page through every submission for an assignment in one fluid keyboard-driven view. Side-by-side text + rubric + comment-bank.

v.

Live in production

Comment bank

Your saved phrases organized by category. Drop into any feedback field in two clicks. Built up over the year.

vi.

Live in production

Assignments + rubrics

Build assignments with criteria, point values, due dates, late penalties. AI can generate a starter rubric you edit.

vii.

Live in production

Quizzes with auto-grading

MCQ, true/false, short-answer with AI grading, scaffolded answer keys. Item analysis after the fact.

viii.

Live in production

Lesson plans + sub plans

Day-by-day lesson plan tied to standards. One click generates a sub-plan for the day. AI can draft a starting lesson.

ix.

Live in production

Attendance + hall passes

Mark attendance per period in under a minute per class. Issue hall passes from the gradebook with destination + return time.

x.

Live in production

Participation tracker

Quick tally buttons during class for participation points. Day-by-day history. Counts toward category grades if you want.

xi.

Live in production

Parent email drafter

Pick a tone (positive / concern / urgent), pick focus areas, AI drafts the email using only first names and the data you select. You edit, you send.

xii.

Live in production

Discussions + modules

Run threaded discussions; group readings + quizzes into modules with publish-on-date.

Chapter II

What we have not built yet.

We name what we have not built so you can plan against reality. If one of these is critical for your school, tell us — we prioritise by pilot-school request.

i.

On roadmap

Voice grading

Record voice feedback per submission, transcribed automatically. Students get the audio + the transcript.

ii.

On roadmap

Live class video integrated

Host a class video call from a class section. Attendance auto-marked. Recording auto-saved (with consent).

iii.

On roadmap

Behavior tracker (positive)

Note positive behavior and pattern-recognize. Counselor gets aggregate trends. Students get badges if your school enables them.

iv.

On roadmap

Plagiarism detection (true-source)

Distinct from AI detection: comparison against a corpus of online sources. Heavier compute, optional per school.

v.

On roadmap

Curve calculator

Apply a curve to a whole assignment with several methods (linear, square-root, target-mean). Preview before applying.

vi.

On roadmap

AI tutor handoff

If you teach a concept and a student didn't get it, hand off to an AI tutor scoped to your lesson, your examples. Returns transcript to you.

vii.

On roadmap

Standards-based grading

Full standards-based mode alongside categories. Students see mastery per standard.

Chapter III

Your gradebook is auditable, your changes are reversible.

The architecture decisions that protect this role specifically, not the generic security copy.

Every grade you enter, every grade you change, is logged with the old value and the new value. If a parent later challenges a grade, your record is intact — you can demonstrate what was entered, when, and by whom. This is what FERPA-grade audit actually means.

Your students' sensitive records — IEP details, accommodations, intervention notes — are AES-256-GCM encrypted at rest. Even if our database is stolen, a thief sees ciphertext for the most sensitive information.

Two-factor authentication is required for your account on first login. There is no opt-out, no "remember this device for 30 days" backdoor. Recovery codes are stored once, by you.

Footnotes
  1. Full architecture in /nova/why — the threat model, the commitments, the gaps named plainly.
